On Wednesday September 16, 2026 workshop organized by Wikimedia Serbia titled "Copyright, Open Source Licenses, and Digitization of Research Materials on the Wikimedia Repository" will be held at the University of Belgrade - School of Electrical Engineering. Open Science Community Serbia (OSCS) is inviting PhD students, researchers and all interested parties to join the workshop, that will start at 11:30 AM on September 16, 2026 in room 314 (III floor of the building of Technical faculties).
Workshop Summary
The modern research environment requires not only the creation of high-quality scientific results, but also their responsible sharing within
the framework of Open Science principles. This interactive workshop is tailored for PhD students, aiming to clarify the legal and technical
aspects of sharing research materials on online platforms.
In the first part of the workshop, participants will be introduced to the legal frameworks governing the use and distribution of scientific content
through Creative Commons licenses, the public domain and the "own work" rule. A special focus will be placed on analyzing the copyright status of
diagrams, charts and field or laboratory photographs prior to publication.
The second part of the workshop is dedicated to practical hands-on work on Wikimedia Commons. Participants will master the technical steps of
uploading, categorizing and digitalizing multimedia research material, adding Structured Data on Commons (SDC), as well as navigating the
OTRS/VRT permission procedures for donating third-party materials for scientific purposes.
